If you’re on the lookout for some amazing windsurfing opportunities, you’ve come to the right place. With some of the best windsurfing conditions in the world, Varadero should be your only choice.
Where is Varadero?
Varadero is located on the Hicacos peninsula and it is Cuba’s largest resort town. There are plenty of hotels here, and restaurants, cafes, banks and shops. The best part about the town is the beach. Undoubtedly one of the best in the Caribbean, Varadero beach stretches for 20km. It is pure white sands, crystal clear water and is surrounded by pretty palm trees.
What’s the weather like?
The climate in Cuba is classified as tropical. It is split into two seasons, wet and dry. The popular time to visit is the dry season where the humidity is a lot less overbearing and the temperature drops to a more comfortable 30 degrees.
Where are the main windsurfing areas?
Varadero beach is extensive, running all down the coast. It’s not just windsurfing that takes place here but kayaking, snorkelling and kite sailing too. These three areas are best known for the windsurfing:
* Bahia de Cochinos
Varadero faces the Gulf of Mexico and the best wind direction is from north to northeast. The wind speed ranges from 15-20 knots and is mostly side-shore.
When are the best waves?
Varadero is great for all abilities as it provides medium waves. This means that the waves are often small enough not to intimidate beginners but can be large enough to excite old timers. The best period of waves is from October to February. The waters are generally very calm.
Are there any windsurfing resorts?
There are plenty! A particularly popular and good resort is the Blau Varadero. This resort sits right on the beach and offers guests real flexibility. You can hire all the windsurfing equipment you’ll need and can also book lessons.
If you are after a holiday of pure windsurfing it’s a good idea to come to a resort that specialises in it. What’s great about the Varadero beach is that there’s a real community feel at these resorts, where seasoned windsurfers will help out beginners and there’s a good atmosphere.
