The Fuerteventura Kite Festival is one of the most exciting events on the island. Hundreds of visitors from around the world get together in November to fill the beautiful blue skies of the Canary Islands with colorful kites.

The festival started back in 1987 and is held every year on the weekend nearest November 8th, lasting for three days. It takes place in the Dunas de Corralejo National Park, on the Playa de Burro (beach of the donkey) in the capital of Corralejo.

Every year the festival gets bigger and better with more local and international visitors trekking through the dunes to see this colorful spectacle – and it’s well worth the walk!

Kite Festival Fuerteventura

The Fuerteventura Kite Festival usually starts on a Friday with a free flying event where everyone and anyone can get involved and fly their own kites. You’ll see a huge range of kites take to the skies in various shapes and sizes, with some that even look like your favorite cartoon character.

If you get there on the first day, organizers give out commemorative kite festival t-shirts and encourage first time visitors to join ‘The Fuerteventura Kite Family’ celebrations.

Many people bring picnics and spend the day at the beach watching the incredible kite displays which last until dusk when a night display lights up the dark skies.

If you can only visit the Fuerteventura Kite Festival for one day though, it has to be on the Sunday. The last day of this beautiful celebration sees over 150 kites given to children to fly, making the event something for the whole family.

One of the most memorable features of the festival though is a charming display of flying teddy bears on parachutes which drop sweets from the skies for adults and children alike to catch – so don’t be afraid to join in! A stunt kite match takes place later with two kites battling it out in the skies while a raffle is called with prizes for winners, including some beautiful Canary Island kites to take home as souvenirs.

The celebrations end with a group photo opportunity followed by dinner and a spectacular firework display on the beach – an event not to be missed if you’re in Fuerteventura in November.

The beautiful island of Fuerteventura is full of natural beauty, but if you’re looking for something to really delight the whole family and make your holiday snaps a little more special, visiting the Fuerteventura Kite Festival is just the ticket.
